Start with a clean silhouette
The outer contour needs to remain understandable after cutting. Avoid:
- Very thin hair strands extending far from the character
- Narrow gaps between limbs
- Tiny floating accessories
- Sharp points that are difficult to handle

- Important facial details placed too close to the edge
A simplified outline does not mean simplifying the illustration itself. It means creating a stable outside shape around the artwork.
For a character with complex hair, include a small background border or connect the outer strands into a clearer contour. For a logo, check whether the shape still reads when viewed from across a booth.
Prepare the cutline and safe area
Supply a high-resolution file with a transparent background when possible. Keep important details inside the intended finished edge.
The production team may adjust the final contour for manufacturing. A mockup should show:
- Finished outside shape
- Artwork position
- Safe distance from the cut edge
- Product orientation
- Any areas that may need smoothing
Do not assume the edge will follow every pixel of the artwork. Very detailed contours can make a product fragile or visually uneven.

Choose a size around the intended use
Animepa’s current custom shaped mouse pad option is available in approximately 40 cm and 50 cm formats. The measurement is applied according to the selected product setup and artwork proportions, so confirm the finished dimensions in the mockup.
Ask:
- Is it mainly a mouse surface or a decorative desk accessory?
- Does the shape leave enough usable area for mouse movement?
- Will it fit typical convention packaging?
- Can it be displayed clearly without taking over the whole table?
- Does the artwork remain readable at the selected size?
A larger format gives the artwork more presence, but also needs more booth space and shipping volume.
Design for a printed desk surface
Artwork that looks good on screen may need adjustment for a physical mouse pad.
Useful design choices include:
- Strong separation between the character and background
- Clear facial features
- Larger text rather than tiny captions
- Controlled dark areas so details do not merge
- A color palette that works across the full silhouette
- Important features positioned away from the outer edge
