What artwork works best?
Strong candidates include:
- Full-body characters
- Chibi characters
- Mascots
- Fursonas and anthro characters
- Animals and fantasy creatures
- Character heads with distinctive hair
- Logos with rounded silhouettes
Artwork with a recognizable outside shape usually reads better than a complex scene. If the design includes a large background, a square pillow or dakimakura may preserve the composition more effectively.
Create a sewable outside shape
Fabric products cannot follow every tiny point in the artwork. Thin hair strands, narrow gaps and floating decorations may need to be connected or simplified.
When preparing the file:
- Keep important facial features away from the outer edge
- Add space around hands, ears and accessories
- Avoid extremely narrow protrusions
- Use a transparent background
- Separate front and back artwork clearly
- Mark the intended outside contour
The production mockup may include a smoother sewing line around the artwork. Review that contour as carefully as the print placement.

Choose a size for the customer and the booth
The current shaped pillow cover is offered in 30 cm, 40 cm, 50 cm and 60 cm options.
30 cm
A compact format for character collections, shelf display and lower storage volume.
40–50 cm
A balanced range for visible character artwork without taking as much booth or shipping space as a large display product.
60 cm
A stronger statement piece for detailed character art, booth display and premium product tiers.
The exact shape changes the perceived size. A narrow standing character and a wide chibi character can feel different even when they share the same nominal measurement.
Explain “cover only” clearly
Many international buyers purchase the inner insert locally because filling adds shipping volume. That can make pillow covers easier to transport and store, but customers need clear information.
On your listing and convention sign, state:
- Pillow cover only
- Inner cushion or stuffing not included
- Finished size
- Fabric
- Zipper closure
- Recommended insert approach, if you provide one
Do not photograph the cover flat if customers need to understand the final shape. A filled display sample can demonstrate appearance, while the product description still makes clear that the order includes the cover only.
Use low MOQ for character testing
For a shaped pillow specification with an applicable MOQ of five, five different designs can share five total pieces—one cover per design. The number of artwork files does not create a separate five-piece minimum for each design.
For example:
- Character A: 1 cover
- Character B: 1 cover
- Character C: 1 cover
- Character D: 1 cover
- Character E: 1 cover
- Total: 5 covers of the same selected product specification
Different products cannot be combined. A shaped pillow cover, tote bag and mouse pad each have their own applicable minimum. Changing size, material or construction may also affect the production setup, so include those details in the quote.

Price and display shaped pillows as statement items
